This palette began with my first minted NFT “Explode”, the idea was the great colorful poppy feel in a space that was often gritty, grungy, and glitchy. Since then I’ve used it as a way to candycoat my works and give them a fun feel even when they deal with darker subjects.

"30Rack Reds"

This palette was born out of a love for rich monochromatic palettes and used as one of one hundred palettes in my Bright Moments project ‘Agar’, in which collectors got to name their unique palette. Tyler (aka ‘30Rack’) named his after himself, and Spongenuity then used the palette in his Bright Moments project ‘Nature Finds a Way’. The 30Rack palette visits its third project in ‘Scribble Together’ in all its red-on-red glory.

"Grains"

The subtly of light neutrals combine to create something almost imperceivable, but rich upon closer view. The Grains palette is an emotional response to the ornate density of ‘Scribble Together’ - but begs viewers to take a closer look, noting each individual color (there are 8 pen colors!) that make the complex linework of the collection soft and textural.

"Threshold"

One of my first memories in Photoshop was experimenting with the threshold tool, in which all pixels become either black or white, and the user chooses a threshold level to help determine how each pixel is colored. It’s a beautifully simple way to analyze a composition, and almost always satisfyingly crisp. For this ‘Scribble Together’ palette - a sort of threshold is applied as the only possible colors for both paper and pen are black or white.

From my collection, nth culture, this palette samples the essence of gold & ivory embroidery atop a black crushed fabric of the Toghu attire.

"Libby"

This palette started with my daughter's favorite phrases. For each, I tried to find a color that represented the meaning and memories I associate with that phrase.

"Wine-Dark Sea"

With a deep love for color, Scribble Together gave me an opportunity to dig into one of the proto-colors: Wine-Dark Sea. The Greek phrase appears over a dozen times in Homer’s epics, the Iliad & the Odyssey. I appreciate how the imagery captures the drunken violence of the sea in a time of war, as well as how the uncanny quality of the language echoes the unknowable depths. I’ve tried to do that justice with the colors. People Eater & Latter Days were two of thirty-two palettes I made during a palette-making binge one afternoon in August 2022. I’ve used them across several generative projects, including Fractured Time and Lace Factory. I find one palette quite playful, and the other a bit melancholy — which really captures the different sides of my personality.

"Black, White & Bright"

"Black, White & Bright" explores, yet again, the relationship between light and color. A dark background, a bright hue and a white accent. Red will be red, and blue will be blue, but how we perceive them will not always be the same.

"Comfort Prism"

Comfort Prism is an RGBY palette with four bold colors and four tints. It's based on Spectrum from because unless until, which was called 'iLoveThis' in code. These colors are mostly cool and relaxing, with occasional splashes of red/orange/yellow to add some excitement.

"Newspaper"

The idea and name came from the old riddle "What is black and white and red all over?"

"Primary"

Since Scribble Together can overlap strokes, the primary colors seemed like great choices for blending.

"Vivid"

I started by importing colors I picked from a photograph of autumn leaves in different colors, which already gave interesting results. But I did tweak colors manually, and even deleted some colors and added new colors. So they ended up pretty different, but the starting point of this process was definitely initiated by those autumn leaves.

"Primary"

Red/blue/yellow and black and white is one of my all time favorite color combinations. It is also an easy starting for many of my generative explorations, before I explore different color palettes. So it is always on my radar to give it a try. In this case, I modified the Vivid palette which I made first, as it had a nice 'yellow', 'red' and 'white' already. So I only had to add a 'blue', and make the background black. For the 'Scribble Together' project, two colors can be combined in a single region, which gives a very interesting mix of colors. This was a lot of fun to experiment with, but also meant a lot of tweaking was needed before I could arrive at a final palette.

"Cadmium Red/Hansa Yellow"

Derived using spectral paint data, this palette represents my personal favorite paint mixture, consisting of hansa yellow and cadmium red. Each of the 5 colors are named after the relative paint concentrations, forming a vibrant and energetic yellow-red spectrum

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of all things gray and black. Inspired by the recent eclipse, I curated a palette that embodies my affinity for the darker end of the monochromatic spectrum. This collection reflects the subtle elegance and depth found in shades of gray and black, capturing the essence of my personal aesthetic.

"Umbra [Cosmic]"

I wanted to reimagine Umbra with a striking burst of color, reminiscent of the vibrant hues of a nebula piercing through the darkness of deep space. This approach aimed to create a dynamic contrast, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of cosmic phenomena against the backdrop of the void.

"Verdant"

I usually steer clear of using green, so I challenged myself to create a green palette that I would genuinely love. With a few ideas in mind and after extensive trial and error, I dialed in a green and blue combination that complements each other beautifully when intermingled at the fine granularity this algorithm produces.

"giverny of the midwest"

The “Giverny of the Midwest” palette by Nathaniel Stern pulls from the artist’s well-known work of the same name. Here, in an homage to Claude Monet, Stern took a desktop scanner, custom battery pack, and computing device, and traversed a lily pond in South Bend, Indiana to create an installation of glitchy, cybernatural prints, with colors ranging from verdant to prismatic because of how the scanner beam’s light reflected back from the water and surrounding plant life.

"Sticky Sole"

Sticky Sole is a cheeky color story of one of life's little annoyances – stepping on a bright colored piece of gum on a grimy NYC sidewalk.

"CxYK"

CxYK is inspired by CMYK printing, a technique I often try to imitate with pen plotters. Cyan, Yellow, and Black are always present, while the "x" in the title can be one of several colors.
